From New Brunswick:
Hi all,
Today, I received a copy of a letter sent from NB Power's CEO David Hay to Cerrejon's President Leon Teicher. Attached are page 1 and 2 of that letter.
The letter was also cc'd to John Harker, the President of Cape Breton University and chair of the Independent Review of the impacts on the Cerrejon coal mine.
Hay mentions that he has read the review and that he has met with members of the Atlantic Regional Solidarity Network and the Fredericton Peace Coalition.
Hay asks Teicher about how Cerrejon will respond to the recommendations made by the Independent Review including "outlining details on timing and ultimately disclosure of results."
Hay also mentions that he has received several letters stating that a worker at the Cerrejon coal mine, and union leader with SINTRACARBON, was killed. He states: "It is my understanding from press articles that Cerrejon is in support of a full investigation by Government. We agree completely with your call for a full investigation."
He also refers to his last letter to Cerrejon: My comments from my last letter stand "we encourage all parties to respect and uphold internationally recognized labour norms and human rights and the collective rights of the affected communities to collective negotiation, collective relocation and reparations."
This letter was in response to requests (
http://frederictonpeace.org/?p=1186) made by members of the Fredericton Peace Coalition and others at a meeting with NB Power officials a few weeks ago. The meeting was called following the murder of Cerrejon coal mine worker Adolfo Montes Gonzales.
An update on how much money we raised at the Saturday night's fundraiser for Adolfo's family is coming.
